Cupping Hand Positions

Learning Objective: Learner will demonstrate gliding cupping proficiently using silicone cups with a technique breakdown approach.

Cupping massage therapy employs various cupping techniques that can be practiced with a variety of cupping tools and hand positions. Cupping tools will include vacuum manual cups with pump gun and silicone cups with two different design styles. Cupping hand positions will vary based upon the technique and the tool ensuring proper body mechanics. Practice with a step-by-step approach to master each hand position for proper application. 

Goal Post Hand Position

Place both hands in a L-shape forming a goal post with cup in between the two hands. 

The interior of the goal post will glide the cup. 

  • Pause and practice for 5 minutes.



L-Shaped Hand Position

Place one hand in a L-shape with cup in between finger and thumb. 

The hand will glide the cup while the free hand will remain in contact with the skin. 

  • Pause and practice for 5 minutes.



One-handed Over the Top Hand Position

Place one hand over the top of a cup while the other hand acts as a guide. Place thumb on one side of cup and fingers on the other side in the center to allow for a squeeze and release action. Place on skin lightly and release to ensure secure seal to the skin.

  • Pause and practice for 5 minutes.



Thumb-Fingers Squeeze Hand Position

Place thumb on one side of cup and fingers on the other side in the center to allow for a squeeze and release action. Place on skin lightly and release to ensure secure seal to the skin. 

  • Practice method for 5 minutes.



Triangle Hand Position

Place two hands around cup and form a triangle. The cup will glide with the hands guiding the direction. 

The hands will remain on the surface providing the client two points of contact; cup and hands. Preferred method to avoid hand fatigue with a one-hand method with the bell shape design.

  • Pause and practice for 5 minutes.



Two-Handed Thumb-Fingers Squeeze Hand Position

Place hands on each side of cup with thumbs on one side of cup and fingers on the other side in the center to allow for a squeeze and release action. Place on skin lightly and release to ensure secure seal to the skin.

  • Pause and practice for 5 minutes.
